Avoid the Light by Long Distance Calling is a brooding, immersive instrumental album that weaves post-rock, post-metal and even progressive metal into a darkly cinematic experience. Layering sharp, intricate guitar melodies over thunderously dynamic drums, the listener gets lost in its dense emotional atmospheres and it big bold soundscapes. The album ebbs and flows through moments of calm and composure which dissolve into vast waves of high intensity and measured fury.
The album is a colossus and was one of my gateway albums into the post-rock genre. The energy and intensity that these musicians put into this record 15 years ago is on another plateau altogether, and to hear it remastered is an absolute joy. I will never tire of hearing tracks like Black Paper Planes & Apparitions bellowing through my speakers 🔥. Glorious
