It took this behemoth 10 years to finally get the vinyl treatment, but good things come to those who wait! The word masterpiece is thrown around far too often within music circles, but eleven years ago a little-known Latvian band released an album that has remained one of my favourite albums ever, irrespective of genre. Audrey Fall’s Mitau is a strikingly cinematic post-metal album that resonates with great emotional depth and huge sonic ambition. Entirely instrumental, the Latvian quartet created this juggernaut to evoke history, memory, and place. Mitau being the former name of their hometown, Jelgava, the album was both personal and unforgettable.

From the opening track, “1944,” the band sets a powerful tone with layered guitars and rolling dynamics that ebb and swell like a tide of remembrance. “Petrina” and “Wolmar” continue the journey, introducing delicate melodies that gradually ascend into waves of near euphoric distortion. The sheer weight and venom carried within those riffs is frightening!

Midway through, tracks like “Driksa” and “Bermondt” shift into heavier territory, showcasing tight rhythmic interplay and a raw, more urgent energy. “Valdeka” acts as a moment of meditative pause, creating space before the emotionally weighty “Eliass” and the lushly textured “Courland Aa.” The album reaches a thunderous peak with “Priboi,” a relentless, expansive track that consumes the listener like a storm rolling in form the sea. It all ends with “Medem,” a brief, somber finale that closes a flawless album with great confidence and grace.

Mitau is not just another post-metal album, it’s a powerful and history fuelled journey told without words, Masterfully constructed, thunderously heavy and deeply moving, It stands out as a bold and confident debut that pays homage to a place called home. I can only thank God that it finally got a vinyl press so that it can sit high and mighty withing my collection!
