When Carved Into The Sun dropped The Earth Fell Away in 2022, it wasn’t just another sophomore release, I felt it was a breakthrough record. Suddenly, they weren’t just another band quietly carving out a little space in the post-music scene for themselves, they were commanding the attention from everyone within it. The album balanced thunderous weight with delicate restraint, creating something both immediate and enduring. It had the kind of emotional gravity that doesn’t just make waves, it reshapes the shoreline. With a record so fully realized and so rightfully praised, the challenge becomes quite clear and it’s a challenge many bands face and that is, how do you craft a follow-up to something that left such an imprint?

Well, to begin, few artists give themselves so completely to a project as Eric Reifinger does, and with this forthcoming release, Silent Tower, that devotion is impossible to ignore. I know Eric through an interview I did with him a couple of years ago now, and as well as being a really cool and personable guy, you can see and hear how focused and driven he is as an artist. Alongside Artem Molodtsov and C.E. Brown, the guys have sculpted a post-rock landscape that is vast yet still remaining quite intimate. Silent Tower is an album where carefully placed crescendos crash like storms, and delicate passages linger like echoes in a hollow tower. Every note pulses with great emotion and every silence carries weight. This is music that hits the chest and stirs the soul, a testament to the power of their unfiltered artistry.

Take the opening track, Catastrophist, as an example. It unfurls with such haunting elegance, weaving a subtle, understated melody through delicate guitars and a richly resonant cello. Patient and deliberate, it simmers slowly, growing with a quiet intensity before erupting into a towering presence. Leaden guitars play with great weight, drums crash like distant thunder, while that deep, rasping bass cements it all with unyielding force, and this is all achieved without ever shifting tempo! It’s a masterful slow burn, a commanding introduction that sets the stage for the album’s full emotional scope.

At The Mountains Mercy introduces the subtle brilliance of Gabriel Reifinger’s keyboards, adding a lush new layer to the band’s sound. Like the opener, it’s patient yet expansive, each note unfolding with deliberate precision. The sonic landscape here is immense, with the bass guitar taking on an almost sinister presence, underpinning the track with dark, hypnotic weight. Over ten minutes, the song moves like a carefully charted journey where no moment feels rushed, and every note lands with perfect, cinematic timing. It’s a track that envelops you completely, revealing more and more with every listen.

Next up, Of Curious Panics stakes its claim as the album’s brooding centerpiece, driven by the dark, insistent interplay of bass and cello. There’s a delicious tension here, which is heavy yet restrained. It's followed by Silent Tower, which thrives on moments of surrender, inviting you to take a deep breath, exhale and lose yourself in its immersive ambience. Even as the music swells and recedes, the track retains a hypnotic serenity, balancing raw power with meditative calm in a way that’s utterly entrancing.

The album closes with What Deepest Remains, which is nearly twelve minutes of expansive, masterfully executed post-rock that invites the listener to simply sink in. That final crescendo arrives as we all hoped it would, like a tidal wave of layered perfection! Sublime in its intensity and flawless in its execution, it's a breathtaking culmination, and a great way to sign off on an album that Carved Into The Sun should be unbelievably proud of.
